Meet the Team: Interview with Amy Unger, RBLP-T

It’s time for another introduction to one of our excellent staff members at #RBLP, and today in #MeetTheTeam we’re speaking with Amy Unger, RBLP-T!

Hi Amy! Thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about who you are and where you’re from.

My name is Amy Unger and I grew up in the Washington, D.C. suburbs in rural Calvert County, Maryland. I spent much of my adult life in the Baltimore area, and over a decade ago moved near Ocean City, Maryland where I have been a beach girl since!

What can you tell us about your education and career background before you started working with RBLP?

I earned my Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). I landed my first job right out of college at Procter & Gamble, where I had the pleasure to learn from one of the most preeminent companies in the world! From there, I switched gears and transitioned to healthcare, where I held a variety of roles from raising money, to helping new physicians onboard, to helping others utilize technology to make their jobs easier. I then moved on to help my friend run her event marketing company, the largest in the Mid-Atlantic, until COVID decimated our industry. Yet again, time to pivot! I am now an executive advisor and workplace coach with Bossibly, and I delight in being a RBLP trainer as well.

Who is a role model that you’ve interacted with in your life that inspired you toward this career trajectory?

I’ve had several tremendous leaders for whom I’ve have the pleasure to work with and for over the course of my career. A co-worker of mine Jill Pratt at P&G one day asked why I hadn’t made the switch from Research & Development into Marketing – she saw something in me I hadn’t seen in myself. Little nudges like that, like breadcrumbs, placed in my path – guiding me, encouraging me to grow as a leader, and take on increasingly more responsibility. There have been many role models over the years – small conversations sometimes that simply showed me a door I hadn’t noticed before. To reflect upon that makes me want to redouble my efforts to help uplift emerging leaders , to see their influence grow with experience and sense of belonging and purpose. It’s paying forward what was done for me.

What drew you to the role that you’re fulfilling with RBLP as a certification instructor?

This is a very natural fit with the work I do with Bossibly – all about helping leaders be more effective at leading. I’m a total nerd for this kind of material, and I found the curriculum and format to be unique and impactful. Teaching via Zoom fits my remote working lifestyle and gives me an opportunity to continue to do 1:1 coaching, my favorite, in a way that creates meaningful dialogue and connection.

In your mind, what is the best definition of “resilience” for those who might be unfamiliar with the program that RBLP offers?

Resilience is the result of going through something challenging and coming out better for it. Specifically for the RBLP curriculum, we are talking about creating resilient teams, which means that everyone is going through those tough times together, and the sum of that effort nets a more positive return than if each individual had tackled it solo. There is something truly special about overcoming something particularly stressful or challenging as a team – that bond shapes you in ways that forging through alone simply does not.

What are the three most important components, in your opinion, that you try to convey to every team that you train under the RBLP certification program?

1. Vulnerability – to be a great leader requires a level of letting go of control to empower others that isn’t apparent on the surface. Throughout the coursework, there are numerous opportunities to explore this topic, and examine through an endless array of scenarios, using good and bad experiences from our own lives.

2. People want to be challenged – creation of stretch goals and engendering a true sense of accomplishment are the responsibility of leaders, and a nuanced skill to develop.

3. Setting the vision – probably the most obvious role of a leader is to effectively communicate what and why, but more importantly, to not explicitly provide the how to empower the team to figure that out collectively.

What is one of your own best personal experiences in your career that has influenced or inspired you in your certification training?

Immediately before the pandemic hit, my CEO and I felt we finally had assembled the leadership team of our dreams – we had led them through the EOS process (as outlined in the book Traction by Gino Wickman) and were beginning to see real growth and leadership emerge. Delegating strategic work and watching these emerging leaders rise to the occasion was a beautiful thing to witness, and they delighted us with creative solutions we wouldn’t have imagined, had we been prescriptive about the how. It was a perfect reminder that leaders aren’t spoon-fed – they are nurtured by creating opportunity to grow.

Amy Unger running the Baltimore MarathonPivoting a little bit from the program – tell us a little about yourself outside of work! What other activities or hobbies do you love?

I have been so fortunate to have connected with amazing people over the years, so I love to spend time with my friends when I get the chance. My background is volleyball – many of my lifetime friends are from playing that sport; I don’t play currently, but I love to move – walking outdoors, exercise classes, dancing… all of it! I’m embarking upon a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program to deepen my practice. I’ve recently found my voice expressed through poetry, so that’s another creative outlet I’m exploring more and more.

Can you give us a quotation that you feel really inspires you to continue inspiring others?

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou

This absolutely fits the RBLP emphasis on being a life-long learner. I take comfort from this sentiment that we don’t need to beat ourselves up for doing the best we could at the time, lacking the insight or wisdom we have today. Said differently: it’s okay to change course armed with new knowledge. And that same “permission” applies to others – giving one another the same grace we give to ourselves.
