The Resilience-Building Leader Program continues our outreach to exemplary non-profits with our Giving Back program. We are excited to offer RBLP Leadership Certifications to the staff of the Travis Mills Foundation, a Maine-based organization which assists recalibrated veterans and their families through long-term programs designed to strengthen their physical and emotional recovery.
The Foundation was established in 2013 by retired US Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills, who was critically injured the previous year during his third tour of Afghanistan; he is one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries. While in recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Mills became a mentor to his fellow officers and following a trip to Colorado to participate in an adaptive sports program, he and his wife Kelsey became inspired to establish a retreat where recovering soldiers and their families could have the same motivational experience.
In the four years following its creation the Foundation purchased the historic Maine Chance Lodge in the town of Rome, which was built in 1929 by cosmetics mogul Elizabeth Arden as an exclusive spa retreat for celebrities. By the time it launched in 2017, the location was transformed into a state-of-the-art facility to benefit and assist combat-injured veterans and their families.
Today, Mills is a well-known motivational speaker, an advocate for veterans, and founder of a nationally-recognized retreat and foundation. Veteran families who have been injured in active duty receive an all-inclusive paid retreat where they can bond with one another, enjoy a restful stay in the outdoors and participate in a large variety of adaptive activities – everything from fly-fishing to horseback riding, culinary arts to self-defense classes.
